FCER got involved with Cocoa when the NMLB Inspector called us. The owner was willing to surrender her to the rescue, as he could not afford the vet bill to remove the imbedded halter. When we picked up Cocoa she was very evasive, and nobody could get near enough to catch her. We got her in the trailer loose, and took her right to Animal Haven Clinic. There she was sedated and the halter removed. It looks pretty gruesome, but she is healing. We estimate this pretty little mare to be about 8 years old. Although the owner had told us she was not trained to lead, the vet discovered that she does halter, lead, and stand tied. Cocoa is also about 150 lbs. underweight, so we'll be working on that too.
